SCORE volunteers are people who give back to the local business community, many of them after they have retired from the workforce. Our members come from all backgrounds, professions, locations, and personal stories. We are all united by our goal to support, encourage, and educate business owners, entrepreneurs, and startups. Today we’d like you to meet Cathy De Troia, one of our SCORE counselors in Asheville. Here is what Cathy has to share about why she volunteers and what skills she brings to the table for local clients.
Q. What are your areas of business expertise?
A. My knowledge is in marketing, financial planning and budgeting, operations analysis, and information systems.
Q. Have you owned your own business?
A. Yes, I have owned a freelance writing business that has waxed and waned over the past 14 years, as well as a house painting endeavor since the age of 19.
Q. Over the course of your career path what has been your #1 strength? What personality trait, skill, or ability was integral to your professional success?
A. I believe my success has hinged on my ability to quickly absorb new situations through active listening, to ask probing questions then step back and do thorough research and analysis before giving feedback. Dogged ambition also helped me a great deal in the early days.
Q. Why do you volunteer for SCORE?
A. It’s simple, I want to help others pursue their small business dreams.
Q. If you could give a new or existing business owner one piece of advice what would it be?
A. Make sure you spend a plentiful amount of your time searching for new customers and keeping current ones happy.
Q. What is one of your favorite things to do or places to go in Asheville?
A. I love to stroll along the banks of the Swannanoa and French Broad rivers while admiring stellar mountain vistas. I also really enjoy dropping into downtown live music venues and put on my dancing shoes!
