SCORE volunteers are people who give back to the local business community, many of them after they have retired from the workforce. Our members come from all backgrounds, professions, locations, and personal stories. We are all united by our goal to support, encourage, and educate business owners, entrepreneurs, and startups. Today we’d like you to meet Elizabeth Lynne Pou, one of our SCORE counselors in Asheville and our current Chair. Here is what Elizabeth has to share about why she volunteers and what skills she brings to the table for local clients.

Q. What are your areas of business expertise?

A. I specialize in the following:

  • business plan preparation
  • human resources
  • strategic planning
  • employee engagement
  • organization effectiveness
  • dispute resolution
  • basic legal questions

Q. Have you owned your own business?

A. Yes, I owned a consulting practice focused on organization effectiveness for 10 years.

Q. Over the course of your career path what has been your #1 strength? What personality trait, skill, or ability was integral to your professional success?

A. My greatest strength is my willingness to take a leap of faith. My ability to do something I’ve never done before is what made me successful throughout my career.

Q. Why do you volunteer for SCORE?

A. I really enjoy meeting existing and budding entrepreneurs and helping them get the information they need to make their businesses successful.  It’s important to me to build connections within the community and I like working with the skilled mentors, my peers, and now my friends at SCORE.

Q. If you could give a new or existing business owner one piece of advice what would it be?

A. Ask for advice, listen carefully with an open mind, and then, use what makes sense to you.

Q. What is one of your favorite things to do or places to go in Asheville?

A. I really like teaching classes at OLLI (Reuter Center, UNCA) and a perfect afternoon for me is strolling around the River Arts District.
